Labs Q & A

What are labs?

Labs include diagnostic tests that allow your provider to diagnose an illness, disease, or other health issues and establish the most appropriate treatment. Examples of labs include:

  • Blood tests
  • Urine tests
  • Nasal swabs
  • Throat swabs
  • Tissue biopsies

National Healthcare Center offers onsite labs so you can undergo lab tests during primary care visits to save time and money.

Why are labs important?

Lab test results give your provider a better idea of what’s causing any unpleasant symptoms. Labs can detect viruses, bacteria, cancerous cells, and other microscopic components you can’t see with the naked eye.

Lab results might show the presence of illnesses or diseases before they cause symptoms, so your provider can treat them before serious complications arise.

Why might I need lab work?

The team at National Healthcare Center may recommend labs if they suspect you have:

  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Thyroid problems
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Vitamin or mineral deficiencies
  • STDs
  • Cancer
  • UTIs
  • Genetic disorders
  • Strep throat
  • COVID-19

Your provider might receive the results of your lab tests the same day or after several days. They discuss the results with you before developing a treatment plan.

What should I expect during lab tests?

When you arrive at National Healthcare Center for your appointment, compassionate staff members greet you. The team checks your temperature, pulse, blood pressure, and weight.

Your urgent care specialist reviews your medical history and asks questions about any symptoms you may have. They complete a physical examination before recommending specific lab tests for you.

Your primary care specialist might use a sterile swab to scrape the back of your throat or the inside of your nose, draw a blood sample from your arm, take a tissue biopsy, or have you leave a urine sample. National Healthcare Center specialists might also recommend you undergo allergy or asthma testing, X-rays, MRIs, or other diagnostic imaging tests.

Will I require treatment?

Based on the results of your labs, the team at National Healthcare Center can develop an appropriate treatment plan that may include home remedies, over-the-counter or prescription medicines, medical weight loss, allergy and asthma treatment, or further diagnostic testing.

If you’re due for a routine physical exam or experience new or unusual symptoms, schedule an appointment with National Healthcare Center by phone or online to find out which labs are right for you. You can also walk into the office at any time for needed labs.
